The Searches – Needles And pins. Royal Command Performance 1981
Great quality video, Best on Youtube! :p Royal Command Performance 1981. The Searches singing live on stage. The Searchers are an English rock band who emerged as part of the 1960s Merseybeat scene along with The Beatles, The Fourmost, The Merseybeats, The Swinging Blue Jeans, and Gerry & The Pacemakers. The band's hits included a remake of the Drifters' 1961 hit, "Sweets for My Sweet"; remakes of Jackie DeShannon's "Needles and Pins" and "When You Walk In The Room"; an original song written for them, "Sugar and Spice"; The Orlons' "Don't Throw Your Love Away"; and a cover of The Clovers' "Love Potion No. 9". They were the second group from Liverpool, after the Beatles, to have a hit in the United States when "Needles and Pins" charted during the first week of March 1964. As musical styles evolved, the Searchers could not keep up and as a result, the hits ran out. While they continued to record for Liberty Records and RCA Records, they ended up on the British "Chicken in a Basket" circuit, although they did score a minor US hit in 1971 with "Desdemona". The group continued to tour through the 1970s and were rewarded in 1979 when Sire Records signed the band to a multi-record deal. Two albums were released: The Searchers and Play for Today (retitled Love's Melodies outside the UK). Both records garnered critical acclaim but did not break into the charts. They did, however, revive the group's career. According to John McNally, the band were ready to head into the studio to ...

I wonder what the cameraman had against John McNally-not a single close up
December 8th, 2011 - 13:17
@Palandy33 oohh! that’ll get em going! can’t wait to hear the responses! ;p
December 8th, 2011 - 14:03
Mike Pender and MPS are the present day Searchers, not John McNally and his group. Their sound is not as authentic as MPS.
December 8th, 2011 - 14:53
Superb!!! Saw Mike Mender yeaterday in Henely In Arden, – still belting em out!!
December 8th, 2011 - 15:48
You cant turn the clock back guys!! wish we could, If I could, then Tony, Chris and Mike would be there, the WERE the sound of the Searches
December 8th, 2011 - 16:34
@myepiphone Why not, lets face it, he was and still is the sound of the Searchers.
December 8th, 2011 - 16:45
Spencer is ok, but he can never replace Mike in anyway shape or form!!
December 8th, 2011 - 16:54
@memorylane1980s True Spencer the guitarist is bald-headed, I don’t know whether or not he is homosexual.
December 8th, 2011 - 16:58
@lannykaster1 You’d better not let Wendy Burton hear you say that!!!
December 8th, 2011 - 17:23
@krakatoa1200 He doesn’t play the guitar with his head!!!!
December 8th, 2011 - 18:03
Tony Jackson was the sound I remember, the whole character of the band changed when he was “demoted” Mike Pender was very good, but didn’t give the edge that Tony gave.
December 8th, 2011 - 18:26
@krakatoa1200 and you cant have a bald headed guitarist in The Searches (they have now)
December 8th, 2011 - 18:45
@krakatoa1200 I TOTALLY agree!! The way he stood the way he sang! loved the guy! keep Rockin! Ian
December 8th, 2011 - 19:34

According to The Searchers (John McNally,Frank Allen) website,Mike Pender left because he wanted more money for his old age and higher billing,he wanted a percentage of the take for himself and his 3 backing musicians would just be on a wage.
December 8th, 2011 - 21:08
@hectorsalinasisback lol yeah I tend to agree with you. Mike, Tony and Chris on the drums WERE the sound of the band, now we cant bring two of them back and Mikes doing his own thing so I think the guys carrying on with the Searches are doing a great job! Put it this way. I’d sooner have them doing it than NOT! Keep Rockin! Ian

@lannykaster1 Good point! As far as I’m concerned, Mike Pender IS The Searchers. He sang many of the original hits and was an integral part of their sound and style. Listen to Mike’s work on the two comeback albums The Searchers made for Sire Records and you will fully understand. The current touring version of The Searchers sounds like a lifeless bar band with old fat guys compared to Mike Pender’s Searchers.

why did Mike Pender leave The Searchers? Surely they’d get more recognition if they stuck together????

A really Good High Energy live performance, one of the Best i think.. Thanks for posting ! Gary t

@ChrisCurtisFan Hi
Love your channel and love The Searches. I live in Manchester England and played in quite a few groups in the sixties and The Searches were a Major influence to me at that time and we played needles & pins, Don’t throw your love away, where have all the flowers gone and a flip side you NEVER here these days called I pretend I’m with you. For me they were at there best when Tony Jackson was with them playing bass, I used to love the way he stood with his violin Bass.

@spacepatrolman Wonderful video!!! As long as Mikey keeps singing, we don’t care who he sings with!
It was he and Chris Curtis who had the magical harmony anyways, and Chris isn’t coming back (RIP). Thanks for sharing this video, Mike! Still…. It would have been wonderful if Mikey, Frank and John could have found a way to keep their act as one….
